Betrayal at Winter Town

Rodrik's severed arm lay next to him. There was no pain, only the surreal feeling of knowing you are about to die. His first thought was of his daughter Beth, then Lord Eddard and Winterfell. This place was good. What happened to the world? Ramsay Snow knelt down and gave him a wet-lipped smile. "The son of Roose Bolton, returned from the dead. You won't be so lucky, Rodrik. Don't fear, I'll take good care of your sweet daughter."

The Story

"Ser Rodrik Cassel and Theon Greyjoy parley in the winter town's market outside the gates of Winterfell. Rodrik demands the ironborn surrender Winterfell, and he promises safe passage for all who were not involved in the murder of children... The parley accomplishes nothing other than terms being given.

Later as the sun sets, a force of roughly 600 Boltons from the Dreadfort arrives and meets Rodrik's Stark army. Believing the Dreadfort men to be reinforcements, Rodrik offers his hand in greeting to their helmeted leader. However, the man takes Rodrik's arm off at the elbow and reveals his identity as that of Ramsay Snow, the Bastard of Lord Bolton."

Gameplay & Strategy

It can be difficult to balance gameplay when the scenario is based on an event that's supposed to be a rout or massacre (like The Red Wedding or Battle in the Whispering Wood). My first goal is to layout the scenario as close to the events of the book/show as possible, and then continue to tweak gameplay to find fun/fair gameplay balance for both players. The Stark player will have some disadvantages while playing Betrayal at Winter Town, especially the fact that they have to Deploy all of their units before the Boltons Deploy any of theirs. I thought this would be a good way to depict how totally taken off guard Rodrik and his men were by the Bolton ambush. This mechanic is balanced by extra Victory Points being placed on Ramsay's unit and another Bolton unit. It is a hard challenge for the Stark player, but that makes victory that much sweeter.

This is a fan-made scenario inspired by CMON Limited’s A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game and is in no way associated with CMON.
