What If? The Mountain vs. The Wall

The old pyromancer’s skin was pulled tight, stretched upwards, as if his eyelids were trying to escape his face. Cersei waited for him to blink, but he remained formidably still. She could not wait forever. “We owe a great debt to the Guild of Alchemists…”

“Some say you owe us a city,” the pyromancer interjected.

“Some are far too presumptuous," Cersei smiled. "I know what you did for us, for this city, but the people believe Tywin Lannister saved King's Landing, not the green flames on the Blackwater. The people still see alchemists as crazed graybeards practicing worthless dark arts in the sewers. We need to show them that you’re more than that. We need to show them the true worth of your substance...” Cersei touched the old pyromancer's shoulder. He never blinked.

The Story

"The Alchemists' Guild, also called the Guild of Alchemists, is an old order of pyromancers. The guild, older than the Citadel, was once powerful, though in the recent centuries, the maesters rose in prominence and pyromancers saw their influence dwindle. The pyromancers claim to posses vast secret stores of knowledge."

While I appreciate the low fantasy aspects of A Song of Ice & Fire Tabletop Miniatures Game, sometimes it's fun to have the 8-foot-tall killing machine go on a bloody crusade to blow-up a seven-hundred-foot tall ice wall alongside some crazed fire-worshipers, religious zealots, and rabid dogs. I think the design team made a really good choice diversifying the Lannister ranks with the Warrior’s Sons and Pyromancers. In What If? The Mountain vs. The Wall you get to take these King’s Landing ‘grotesqueries’ up to Castle Black and try to kill Jon Snow (so that Cersei can sleep better at night).

Gameplay & Strategy

While the central gimmick of this scenario is ‘Pyromancers try to blow-up Castle Black,’ that's just a fun sideshow to the real battle taking place over Objective tokens. The Night’s Watch will have plenty of cover for the 2 Objectives closest to their Deployment Zone from the arrows raining down from the Castle Wall, so the Lannister player needs to focus on the 3 tokens in the middle of the table.

If the Night’s Watch forms a Scorpion and Crossbow gun-line to hound the 2 flank edge Objectives, stay behind your Palisades and wait for the right moment to Charge and take the Long Range units down. Lannister players should maneuver their wildfire carrying Pyromancers into enemy territory as soon as possible. If they’re destroyed at least they’re going to take a good chunk of the Night’s Watch with them.

This is a fan-made scenario inspired by CMON Limited’s A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game and is in no way associated with CMON.
