The Skirling Pass

Qhorin Halfhand had seen bone-wearing Wildings before. Bones of elk, bear, shadowcats, men, women, even children. He wondered if they would wear him once he was dead. The thought quickly faded, as he had to focus on the threat at hand. The Wall was about to be attacked by bone wearers, and cave dwellers, and cannibals. Qhorin had recited his vows many years ago. Those words had changed everything about him. They were the watchers on the wall, the shield that guards the realms of men. He knew what had to be done.

The Story

"The Skirling Pass is considered by the Night's Watch as a probable place to find Mance Rayder's wildlings. Qhorin Halfhand's group is sent to scout it for signs of wildlings. Stonesnake and Jon Snow scale the Skirling Pass at night to ambush a trio of wildling watchers, where they kill two of the sentries. Jon captures Ygritte, but releases the wildling rather than execute her. While retreating back to the Fist of the First Men, the scouts are overtaken by Rattleshirt's wildlings."

Gameplay & Strategy

To recreate the treacherous terrain of the Frostfang Mountains, this scenario adds a dice roll at the start of every activation which could potentially stop your turn dead in its tracks. I know some people dislike the addition of more random elements to the game, but I like to think of it as a reasonable simulation of unpredictable terrain. Even the greatest battlefield strategy could fail on the whim of a slip or fall. Rolling dice is already a key component of this game, and since this scenario takes place is such a dangerous location I thought the addition was warranted.

This scenario is a ‘King of the Hill’ style battle. Being on the Plateaus early will help grow your Victory Point lead, but it's not as important as being the last one on top. The Free Folk player should concede one Plateau and focus on surrounding the other. The Night’s Watch player shouldn’t be afraid of getting down from the Plateau to retreat if you’re going to be surrounded, or go on the offensive and take the enemy by surprise. The D3 Wounds Plateau safety net is a great advantage, but it doesn’t compensate for a lack of strategy.

This is a fan-made scenario inspired by CMON Limited’s A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game and is in no way associated with CMON.
