Capture of Harrenhal

The hinges screeched. The front gate of Harrenhal peeled through the mud as Timeon entered the castle, a soggy bag slung over his shoulder.

“What is it?” asked Urswyck the Faithful.

Timeon dropped the bag’s contents into the muck. It was a goat’s head, its eyes ripped out and horns sliced off. “He’s coming,” Timeon spat. “He and his men are enjoying a lusty night, but they’ll be at the gates by midday at the latest.”

“Vargo demands we stay and defend the castle,” Urswyck informed the Dornishman.

“Might as well take our orders from him, then.” Timeon gestured to the severed head. “After tomorrow, there’ll be no difference.”

The Story

"Under orders from Lord Tywin Lannister, Gregor and the Mountain's men retake Harrenhal. Almost all of Vargo's Brave Companions flee before he arrives, allowing Gregor to retake the castle easily. A cook, angered by having his foot cut off by Vargo, opens a postern gate to the Lannister men, and Vargo is found delirious and alone in the Hall of a Hundred Hearths."

The Capture of Harrenhal, like a lot of events, happens off-page in A Song of Ice and Fire. In A Feast for Crows, the story is recounted to Brienne how Gregor and his men sauntered into Harrenhal and tortured a half-mad Vargo Hoat to death. This scenario reimagines the event to incorporate a skirmish between Gregor and the Brave Companions. Vargo is half-mad from his festering wound and willing to do anything to survive.

This is a fan-made scenario inspired by CMON Limited’s A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game and is in no way associated with CMON.
